 On Oct 5, 1998, Macleans magazine wrote a cover feature story on the environmental crisis of land based oil pollution - based on recent scientific evidence that the greatest environmental pollution in the world is due to oil runoff and drainage into our water systems.  Oil pollution from the parking lots of shopping malls and of office buildings and
apartmentsA major contributor to this chronic waste stream is the transportation industry. Studies of urban streams and water bodies have indicated a hydrocarbon level as high as eight times the expected base level. The largest concentration of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination is found in the parking lots of shopping malls and of office buildings and apartments. This contamination is finding its way into the water system by natural means (rain) and is being compounded by man made attempts to clean parking stalls using strong detergents and chemicals that are flushed down the drain with the oil.
